A cracked cell can still support lower loads but the voltage drops greatly with the load of the starter, and relay chatter can also be expected.
If you can start with jumper cables, then the battery is probably the only problem in the starter system. That does not mean that an charging circuit could not be creating problems. But a failure in the charging circuit would lead to low voltages all of the time and the lights would not be as you observe.
Check battery terminals for tigheness and clean contacts. Check that the cables that go into the terminals do not have a problem in that contact area, corrosion or mechanical. Check engine ground cable connections and check cable tigheness at starter too. Danger: Tools on the starter terminal that touch other object can create very dangerous sparks. One should always discon the battery before such work.
