Why no LSD?

My Saab does just great in the snow: the Pilot Alpins handle starts, stops and turns like they were on dry pavement, even on 10" of snow and at relatively high speeds. The trouble begins when, going uphill on a steep mountain road, I have to stop and try to get moving again on a hard, icy surface. Even using all the tricks in the book, things can get pretty interesting, especially if there is another vehicle behind you. My question is: in the absence of AWD, wouldn't it make sense to have a Limited Slip Differential? Several years ago it was a rather common and inexpensive option on a number of sports cars and it proved incredibly effective in low-grip situations (you would get some traction out of both driving wheels, instead of having one stop completely and the other spin idly). Does anyone have any idea why LSD is not offered any more these days? Especially on cars like Saab, that are designed and made in Snowland?
Thanks for your comments.
Drive carefully (especially on slippery roads).
