I tried something similar to SteveB, but made no permanent cuts. I simply removed the ash tray place holder. Then I bought a piviting cell-phone mount extension and screwed it with two quick washers to the lip of the receiver for the ash-tray place holder. This way, I can pivit the whole skyfi cradle down for removal of the unit. I'll see if I can take a picture. The good thing about this location is you are quite close to the unused amp and/or telephone harness for power, etc.
I also wired a switch into the blank in the console (for the convertible, I think?) to manually disable the power antenna funciton, as I almost never listen to regular radio anymore.
