Topic heading pretty much says it all. I'm looking to get out of my 97 Grand Cherokee and into something smaller and more fuel efficient while still being practical and sporty. I've always thought Saabs were cool, so I'm thinking a 9-3 or possibly a 9-5 may fit the bill. I'll probably end up with a 9-3 because of price, however. I've always thought of Saab as a practical if not slightly quirky sports sedan that handles well. Is this true?

I've been searching the boards, and from what I've found, I can probably expect to get around 30 mpg, if not better, on mostly highway driving. I'm moving shortly, and I'll have a 60 mile round trip commute to work, so reliability and fuel economy is a concern.

I've also noticed that the manual climate controls seem to be problematic. Is this something that pops up early, or rears it's head later in life? Due to my budget, I'll probably end up with one in the 60-80k mile range, is this something that I'll have to deal with then, or are the chances good that it'll be fixed already?

Also, anything I should be wary of when looking at a car with that mileage? Any other problem areas I should watch out for? And will I be able to get say 140-150k out of the car w/out major problems?

I see the 9-3's refered to in 3 ways: 9-3, 9-3S, and 9-3 SE. I kow the SE is a different engine and trip level, but what is the S? Are the base 9-3 and 9-3S the same car just refered to in different ways? And which would be the best model to go for?

Oh, and one last thing: at almost 90k, my Jeep is a rattle trap and sounds/feels like it is shaking itself to pieces. How is the build quality of Saabs? Can I expect a relatively quiet and smooth ride w/out all kinds of squeeks and rattles and bangs from underneath? That's really what I'm looking for right now after being in the Jeep for 4 years. No rattles and suspension clunks would be a REALLY nice change of pace.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Mike
