I too have a 1999 9-3 SE convertible. The SID has been flashing "soft top failure" at me recently whenever I lowered or raised the top. I found a post on here that told how to fill up the hydraulic fluid. I did it last week and the error messages immediately ceased. I had never previously seen any signs of fluid leaking, not sure where it went. It appears that filling the fluid solved my problem.
