And you know, i think i would have sold the car if it wasn't for this site.
I put aside saturday to get some work done on the 99 Se Conv. Most importantly, i had to fix the soft top, which after sitting for 8 months or so, wasn't going up or down. well, thanks to the posts here (enzo wrote a great post, i believe) i picked up a can of hydraulic fluid, grabbed a ratchet set and ripped up the pump. half hour later, (and an unusually light amount of swearing) i had the top working flawlessly again.
feeling confident in my mechanical abilities (and at least a couple hundred bucks richer), i took on another project i'd been meaning to do: the tbtc porting. i'd purchased a spindle and some sanders last year, but never had the time (or balls) to start unbolting important, expensive or heavy pieces under the hood. until this, the only thing i felt confident in doing under there was putting in a k&n airfilter. so i charged up the makita and started unbolting--those two came off really easy. to my surprise, the tbtc had already been ported! although it's a non-hot '99 the tbtc didn't have the lip and i believe i have the single pass intercooler!
great, but now i was really jonsing some performance gains, and having already broke a few things (the plastic lock-down pins in the pass-through hole) in the days first tinkerings session, i wasn't about to let fear get in my way. besides, i'd already unscrewed and replaced some important-looking metal things.
i broke out the dawes mbc i purchased last summer (but again, originally didn't have the balls to start messing with) and with an old printout of erics site page (does it still exist online?) a mini hose clamp and some electrical tape, i had the thing hooked up. 3 test runs in the neighborhood (god there was a lot of weekend traffic) and i had it set.
gave car a quick wash, took shower, dug out fingernails, and headed off to a friend's barbecue.
on the first really open stretch of highway, i had a porsche C4 S holding me at 50mph. ("S"... please) checked oncoming traffic, drifted back a bit, downshifted to 3rd (i think) and launched. All i can say is... holy shi.te... boost really kicked in before i was even out of our lane (came closer to his bumber than i wanted). i could not believe the acceleration to 75mph or so. i was giggling.
next car i came up on was--no kidding-- a new C4 Turbo (this is Eastern L.I.) feeling a little childish from my previous pass, and knowing i was clearly beat and looking really foolish if this guy was game, i was content to follow him at 60.
the rest of the drive was one of my best experiences with this car. Here are the ingredients: one of my favorite stretches of twisty road--just paved!, my 99 5spd with mbc, k&n,(TBTC Ported!!) sport exhaust, SAS swaybar, 1500-mile-old Bridgestone SO 3's and Soul Coughing's Greatest hits in the cd. wow.
airbox mod happens as soon as i find a foot of 3' pvc and bell mouth. mbc +a happens as soon as i get a hold of an apr. anyone have any recomends??
i'm hooked and i'm not selling.
thanks for all the saabnet help and reading this rant...
