Driver's side mirror, no horizontal movement, 2K 9-3 SE

Driver’s side mirror doesn’t want to move horizontally anymore. It moves fine up and down and the passenger’s mirror works fine. So I don’t think it’s the switch. I assume it is the gearing as I can hear the motor working as I press the switch. It is possible that the gears are not connected behind the mirror?
I had to replace my mirror in my 89 9000 many, many years ago and it never fully seated in the housing and always jiggled as I drove down rough roads. I don’t want this on my 2000 9-3- SE.
I’ve looked at some old posts (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-3/index.html?bID=76086) and I found a diagram of how to modify the mirror for taller drivers. I was wondering if this is the proper method to pop the mirror.
Once I pop the mirror off, how do I align the gearing?
Any help or advice appreciated.
Thanks.
