Of the dozen or so cars I've had in my life, only one was an automatic. And all the rest I practiced heel-toe (or as the pedals would allow) downshifting. A couple of those cars I put a hundred thousand miles on and never had to replace a burned clutch or rebuild a trans.
I say learn to do it properly and it makes driving all the more enjoyable as well as keeping you engaged with driving.
