Saaaaaaab's explanation DOES NOT make any sense. If you have 0 gallons in your tank your DTE should be 0 miles regardless whether you have been averaging 10 or 100 mpg on your last tank (more accurately, since last reset).
The problem with DTE is that it is using the same fuel level gauge as your instrument cluster and which is typically quite inacurate. The MPG number is calculater from injector pulse duration and vehicle speed (typically 10% accurate).
