Softening suspension to absorb more road imperfections?

2002 Saab 9-3 SE with premium package (i.e. "sport chassis," whateverthehell that means), 17" wheels with Pirelli PZero Nero M+S 215s.
So, I am fully aware that these are high-performance, low-profile tires on large performance wheels. Yes, I understand all of that. Don't scoff; to be honest the wheels & 215s were more of an aesthetic choice than anything else.
BUT... I am wondering what can be done in terms of the suspension, springs, dampers, shocks, etc. to soften the ride. I know I have the premium package which includes a so-called "sport chassis" - what is that comprised of and does it produce a harsher ride?
I am willing to sacrifice performance for smoother bump and road-imperfection absorption, and of course smaller rims with smooshier tires would be the most obvious route but that is not an option now.
What can I do? Thanks!
