You add more weight to the car if you carry a couple cans of soda into the car with you.
The rubber (as is reported on the MP website) is to counteract the rattling noise that some have reported with the aluminum clamp. And the thickness and compression of this rubber is insignificant compared to the OEM donut. Have you actually seen this part?
Since I began this thread, innocently enough, can I just end it by saying that the two designs clearly both work, the differences in performance may be negligible, and the cost difference is not! Dean's post said as much and after reading several dozens of supportive posts here and the perf. BB, this was enough for me. I can't wait to get mine soon!
