Being a software developer I wondered the same thing. If the car has had the same software from 0 to 30K+ miles, something else has changed to cause these problems. I think they just wanted me out of their hair so they did "something" but I concur - I'm likely to be using SAAB Roadside again in the not-too-distant future.
