I have a friend who has a 2001.5 Passat and he has had nothing but problems with it. Since purchasing it, it has been in the shop for over 150 hours of servicing. He has had problems with lights, seats, sunroof, and a few other things. Most covered under warrenty, but some not. He also thinks there is a major Alternator problem that they have not diagnosed yet.

Now this could be an isolated case, but I would still be very hesitant about purchasing that model year after his experience.

As for the the car itself, it has a little less power than the Saab, but i think it is a little roomier, especially the back seat. Does not have the stearing wheel controls, but the heated seats have 6 levels of heat, which is great for our Canadian winters! I prefer the Saab to the Passat, but I am a little biased. He thinks the Passat is a great car, good value for money, but make sure you have a VW dealer as a friend...

Just a few thoughts. Good luck with your decision!
