My wife drives a '99 9-3 with 15" 3-spoke alloys. I've been battling a mysterious leak since last fall, and now i'm just scratching my head.
Over the winter, I'd find that the tire would lose 7-10psi every few days. There was no visible sign of damage to the tire or rim, and once when i had it into Saab for service I had them look at it - no problem found. The service advisor thought that maybe there was a "rim leak". The problem was at its worst during the few weeks here in DC when it was bitter cold - overnight lows in the teens and single digits.
About a month ago I finally took it to Sears and had them remount the tire with a new valve and with some sealant to combat a possible rim leak. Since that day it was fine - or so i thought.
The car hasn't been driven since Sunday, and this morning (overnight temps were in the mid-30s) the tire was nearly flat (7.5psi). I filled it up and drove it to work (where i have underground parking and the ambient temp is ~50degF). I just checked it and after 9 hours since filling it up, the tire has not lost any pressure.
I can only assume at this point that there is an ambient temperature below which the rim contracts so much that it loses its ability to seal against the tire. Is this possible? are there any remedies besides buying a new rim or moving to Florida?
thanks for any suggestions.
