I have a '96 SET with a few AC issues (leaks etc.), and there is no huge power loss when the compressor engages. At idle there is a small bump in the rpm as the ecu adjusts for the extra load. There is some loss of power with the AC running, but that is due as much to heat and loss of IC efficiency than the compressor.

If you see a huge loss of power, or a big drop in rpm at idle, then the compressor is working too hard for some reason. Possibly loss of lubrication, or overcharge... does not necessarily mean you need a new one. O-ring seals loose elasticity... oil seeps out... someone ads refrigerant w/o also adding oil... or too much oil, and you get a restriction in the system...

Since my car is almost 10 years old, I would not buy a new OEM compressor if mine goes out, even at a discount... remanufactured compressors for the NG are available for a reasonable price now, just shop around. Even Autozone has them for less than $300 for the NG900!
