Engine temp gauge dies, then no A/C

2002 9-3 SE, manual trans, 40k miles, automatic climate control.
Sometimes while driving my engine temp gauge dies and the needle just falls all the way down, as if the car was off or the night panel button has been pressed. All other gauges and lights fine, no warning message or indicator comes up. When needle has "died," A/C will not work (auto climate control). If I turn off the car and then turn it back on again it usually fixes itself, only to happen again later. Any ideas? Some sort of thermostat is broken maybe?
