White smoke often means coolant being burned (vaporized) in the engine. The most obvious reason for "clouds of white smoke" at one time is a blown head gasket, but not the only possible one.
Some NG900 and 9-3 models have loose head bolts. They either left the factory that way, or the bolts loosen up. Those cars require a head bolt re-tightening. That is a lot easier and cheaper, and does not have to be done by a Saab dealer or a Saab mechanic. Note that some Saab mechanics may be unwilling to try this as a solution if the car is burning coolant in large quantity, because there is no guarantee that it will solve the problem.
One 9-3 I observed having the bolts retorqued had one bolt (driver side fron corner) which was so loose that the mechanic could turn it back and forth with the torque wrench with no effort. That engine had also been diagnosed with a head gasket problem, but the owner will probably avoid having the head pulled.
There are several people on this board who have done this. The procedure is in a Saab TSB which can be downloaded, and the torque settings have been discussed and posted here. Good luck.
