I am pleased to report that my check latches / tonneau cover problem was resolved at no cost.
I had a problem where the tonneau cover would not lift. The soft top itself seemed to have enough lift power, but the back section would not lift to get out of the way of the soft top. When trying to close the roof, a check soft top or check latches message would appear and the soft top would lose lift after rising a couple of feet. I used a pole to hold the tonneau cover out of the way and with a few tries and just the right lift on the back cover, I was able to get the soft top closed. The back end would not quite close all the way (a few inch gap) but it was close enough to drive around without trouble. At that point, I would get the frequent "check latches" message at start up or after slowing down and speeding up again, etc.
My dealer checked the car and found that it was a simple problem with a release cable (behind the fabric on the right back side of the trunk). Fixed it in two minutes at no charge for me (he disconnected the release cable). I like to put in a plug for a nice service department like this - Continental Motors in Oceanside, San Diego area. I have found them to be very honorable, unlike the other San Diego SAAB dealer (MKB).
