It doesn't sound like a normal clutch disc/pressure plate problem but more like a hydraulic clutch line failure or a master cylinder/slave cylinder failure.
If it is a slave cylinder problem, the transmission needs to come down anyway and the normal way to present the job is to suggest that the whole clutch assembly is replaced together with the slave cylinder, especially with your cars mileage.
Without looking at the car I can only guess and we can hope that the people who are actually looking at the car knows the ins and outs.
In some really rare occasions, the throw out bearing will eat its way through the pressure plate fingers and that would be a sudden failure like that too.
In some other cases I have seen one of the 4 springs in pressure plate coming loose and get jammed between clutch disc and pressure plate.
So as you can see, it is several failures that can point to that the dealer is right but maybe they could have explained it a little bit better than just say "you need a clutch and slave cylinder for $1600.00"
