The brake shoes inside the drum (hat) portion of the rotor are wearing. With thinks working right and without owner abuse, those pads should have zero wear over the life of the vehilce. If you adjust the mechanism without fixing the faults, you are simply putting a noose around your neck. Dealers will be glad to do this adjstment for you as they will see you come back for expensive repairs.
The caplier needs to be pulled and then the rotor. Then the mechanism needs to be cleaned and lubricated to enable the shoes to stop dragging and wearing. When that work is done, you can install the rotor and adjust the slack adjuster star wheel with a lever (screwdriver) through the access holes in the hub face.
Remove the pads and clean the caliper slots. Lube these and pad backing plate contact edges with lithium grease to act as a rust deterent. Clean and lube pins and holddown clips the same. It gets messy.
Search drs<underscore>install and find the brake work posts and read them for further info.
