Just finished retorquing the heasd bolts on my '95 NG900 (2.3l n/a). Found a few of the bolts tight to 60 +/- ft-lbs. Others including 1,5,9 and 10 were less than 30 (#10 less than 20) ft-lbs tight. Retighten all according to Townsend's directions and installed a new valve cover gasket. No sludging was found in the cam shaft chambers or on the cover.
Now for the Ahs__t. Tightened everything up and go to startt the car and it cranks but won't fire. Found the #16b fuse blown - that's the injector solenoids. Found that I had caught the leads to the #3 injector under the valve cover and shorted-out the lead as I tightened the valve cover bolts. Loosened the cover pulled out the wires - I had to solder on teh the lead, which was cut right through.
Put everything back together and the car startes and idles very smoothly.
SO, perhaps I was just pushing too hard - but watch out for the electrical lead around the valve cover when you're reinstalling the cover.
