My 01 Viggen came with the winter tire package, which adds 16" wheels (Saab/BBS) and studless snow tires. The ride is very much softer. Of course, the snow tires are a bit softer rubber than a high-performance summer tire. I think the tire pressure is about 5psi less as well. The handling is worse than my 17" wheels and Eagle F1 tires, pretty much all the time.
The industry consensus is that lower profile = better performance, no matter what the application. You simply will not have that fine tuned control when there is lots of rubber between the ground and the wheel...
