It comes out complete with transmission through the bottom. If you don't have a lift, and an engine hoist, it will be a pain. My guess as to what happened to your engine is the balance shaft chain broke and is bunched up at the crank. That would expain why the engine can turn a little in each direction. It probably ruined your oil pump as well as your timing cover. You'll find the prices of these parts are more than the value of your car. That said, you should probably line up a used engine before you tear into it. Once the drivetrain is out, you'll have a pretty big mess in your garage.
Other than the engine hoist, and some really good jackstands (assuming you don't have a lift), the only other special tool you'll need are a set these funky fuel line removal tools. GM uses these goofy snap connectors for the fuel lines on your car (and many others). Autozone sells the tool to disconnect them Cost under $20. The tool is hard to describe, I think its pictured in your haynes manual.
Might want to start working on those subframe bolts now if you live in an area that uses salt on the roads. The middle ones can be a bear.
