Well, I decided to try the belt first. I had done the short belt mod with the 2460 mm belt. I picked up a 2455. I had been having a lot of belt squeal and well, it seemed the best bet.

I'm pretty good with this belt. 2 10 mm bolts to remove airbox. slacken adjuster and pull the old belt loose. Wiggle it out. 3 minutes tops. Excellent. No need to crawl under this car.

Get out special tool. A piece of folded flat steel from furnace duct work. From home depot, it's about the length of a yardstick but folded in a Z shape (cross section). I cut the middle of the zed up for about 2 inches and then squished the sides and covered them with duct tape. Yes, I love Red Green. The result is a long "fork" with the fork in the non-obvious axis. Then I put a slight bend or kink in the tool 5 inches up.

Slipping the belt into the fork, I was able to reach down and push it past the crank pulley. Reaching down with a real yardstick, just push the belt out of the fork and using both, push the belt under the pulley.

Route the rest of the belt and Bob's yer uncle. 10 minutes. Woo hoo.

I pulled a seat heater switch from the dash and stuck my DVOM probes into the connector to watch the voltage. 14 volts. Yes, I am a god!

A quick trip the beer store and then a scoot along the Gardiner expressway westbound to charge it nicely. Approaching Islington, the lights came on. Shitsky - the belt fell off. A quick drive up to the Queensway and into a brightly lit store front parking area (pet valu). I had almost all the tools with me so I pulled the airbox. I had been speaking with my brother (driving the other direction) as the belt fell off, so he showed up literally before I shut the engine off to hold the emergency light for me.

Darn me. I'd installed the belt upside down and not quite on one pulley. It had worked its way off an in the process split down the center (for about 2 feet). Thankfully it was still under the crank pulley so I didn't need the special tool. I flipped the belt and reinstalled it and got home safely. Note to self - get new 2455 mm belt today.

I just thought I'd share.

Nielsen
