Overheat/T-Stat Question...HELP!

Low coolant warning. Filled with 50/50 (about 8 ounces). Ten miles later the temp gauge tops out. I thought I let it cool enough, but got the wonderful green shower when I slowly removed the reservoir cover! When it WAS cool enough I added more A/F, but it only took about quart. Ten miles later the temp gauge topped out...as a last ditch effort, I turned the heater on full, and the temp dropped to a non-scary level. I'm in Buffalo. It's cold. I have no garage to work within. So my fix needs to be one of exactness, not full on exploratory laporotomy (sic). I've had a minor leak within the heater system for years. Thus I only lose A/F during the winter. It is about 8 oz every 6 weeks. Can the thermostat be stuck SHUT? Seems weird but who knows, it is a Saab.
Help please, as I'm without transportation until this is fixed!
Thanks in advance,
jt
