FWIW - I found a very good independent repair shop in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley - Reseda area) today and wanted to share.
I found the shop by searching Saabnet for an answer on how to cancel the horn beep when setting the alarm. I followed a link and found another good review of this shop.
Called the guy up and asked how much ( called several on the list - they all were high and not too confident about using the TECH 2 analyzer needed for this task ) this guy was very matter of fact about performing the task and said stop by anytime today and it will only take a few minutes.
I went out there ( shop owner name on recommendation list was Pierre Cuny but the man who owns and runs shop now is Hung Thai - no alarms went off in my head when i saw the guy, i immediately put two & two together and was completely at ease with the situation - I also work with my hands for a living and can size up people quickly ) Hung walks right up to my Saab before I can even shut the engine off, says hello and asks if I called about the alarm. As soon as I say 'Yes' he smiles and retrieves an almost new Tech 2 and is flying through all the menus like a teenager playing video games. He asked about a few options that i hadn't thought of or knew could be reset and we were all done. O.k. $20.
My Saab is a 96 900S with less than 20,000 miles ( you read that right - it just sits there & I drive another car mostly ) so he asks if he could just check a few things out because things can go old just sitting there. He recommended changing /flushing brake fluid since it can get old even though it's just sitting there - I say sure do it ( price was cheap ) so he opens the cap and says 'well i'm surprised but yours looks quite good so lets hold off ' ( i have never had brakes worked on yet ). Then he looks at the engine belt and with a high power light shows me how obviously & badly cracked it is and recommends changing it - i say yeah sure... when - he says i can do it now, it will only take 20 minutes. (!) The guy used all genuine Saab parts was very clean and the price was right.
( oh yeah he also replaced a plastic pulley he says can go bad (?) ).
We talked briefly and I confirmed that he had purchased the business from the original owner ( who still comes around to check up on things ) the new owner Hung Thai was a Saab Dealer Service Tech form many years and has the Certs. on his office was. When you meet him you will be comfortable ( I a bit touchy and particular so i'm sure you will feel confident about using this guy - BUT be forewarned his shop is MESSY ( the sign of genius ),
