No idea why the bad valve was able to cause it, I was sure it was the compressor. But, dealer replaced exp valve (warranty at the time) and that cured it.
You might be able to diagnose this with gauges but I don't know if the compressor will produce high pressures that you can measure if the exp. valve is bad or if it just blows to the low side. You could try posting here: http://acsource.net/acforum/
