Hello. I have read many of the post about this subject, which point to several different causes and solutions (most of which are fairly expensive). I would like some advice about how track down the correct problem.

First I will ask my question then list some details: What would be the best why to track down this problem. I am fearful of going to the dealer and them reading a miss firing and replacing the DI when it actual is a bad o2 sensor or wire connectors. Would reading the error codes eliminate any of the above repairs? Can the error codes be read anywhere besides the dealer?

My situation: A couple days ago my 93 1999 convertible started to hesitate. It first started on my 10 mile drive to work with one or two hesitation during acceleration. On the way home again I had one or two as well. By the next day on the way to work the hesitation got more sever and happen during every acceleration. On the way home it would continuously (multiple) hesitate during acceleration and even at idle I could feel the engine hesitating. During the trip home the check engine light came on during acceleration and has reminded on. I have not driven it since. I have always had the problem were at idle (stop light) every now and then the idle would dip. It did not happen that often and was never sever, so did not worry about it.

I compiled the possible reason for this from past posts:
1.) Bad Gas. (I will try this first by adding dry gas and filling with 93 octane) $5.00
2.) Spark plugs/wires (replace) $50
3.) O2 sensor (Replace) $100
4.) O2 or other wire connectors bad. $?
5.) Catalytic converter (replace) $250
6.) Direct Ignition (seems to be the most likely and would require replacement) $500
7.) MAF (Replace) $350
8.) Idler pulley & sensor assembly together with the throttle butterfly and shaft these items are attached to. (This was due to water damage from going through deep water?) $350.

Quite a list of fairly expensive repairs. The last one is interesting, since I remember about the 6 months ago I was driving during a particular rain day were I often had to drive through standing water 1/2-2 inches deep at 10-30MPH. While driving the engine started sputtering for a while, I suspected from the water. Things seem to clear up the next day after drying out, although, after that I always seem to think that the car lost a little power and start to get lower MPG (I dismissed it as imagination and the fact that my job took me to a different diving location (more stop and go)). This may or may not have anything to do with the present problem, although.

I appreciate any suggestions or comments.

Keith
