Unusual noise when accelerating Posted by Michael [Email] (#1365) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Michael) on Wed, 24 May 2006 13:06:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hello, I have a '96 900 SE Turbo with 132k miles. Everything is working normally except there is a noise like thousands of frogs and crickets when accelerating. This starts at about 2,700 rpm and lasts until about 4,500 rpm in all gears except 5th. Noise is less in 4th and loudest in 2nd and 3rd.
Both pulleys and belt replaced one month and 2k miles ago. I believe the PS pump, compressor, and alternator are all ok but have not checked their pulleys with the belt off. PS works, AC works, and the system charges normally.
I do not think the sound is clutch related but possible. When at park, I raise the rpm into the above stated zones and there are no noises while the car is in neutral.
This noise started a week ago. The turbo silencer was taken off a year ago when I added a Viggen IC. I also modified the airbox to virtually open the bottom of the airbox with sheet metal on the side to prevent hot engine air to enter. Any ideas as to what started this noise a week ago?
