I bought a set of cheap... I mean frugal front door speakers for my car. These Goldwood woofers cost me $11 apiece. Given that I am an audiophile, I figured I would post my impressions of them.
For installation, I had to modify the black plastic adapter plate to account for the bigger magnet and bigger face. I basically had to cut some of it off with a coping saw so that it would fit. It seems that most 6.5" woofers would require the same.
The sound? It is actually an improvement over stock. The bass is less deep but tighter. It is less "plumpy" sounding but more accurate. I plugged in some test tones and compared it to the stock one after doing just one side. There was less deep bass but not much less. These are woofers and not subwoofers. There was also less midbass but it was more accurate and stronger. There was also a little more midrange presence which the system needed anyway.
Playing a sine sweep through the car revealed that the overal sound was smoother. I did this for each side when only one side was done and then again after both sides were done.
The sound is surprisingly better overall. The side mirrors vibrate more if the music is loud. These speakers are stronger up loud than the others and the car doors will let you know that. Playing older music which has limited range reminds you that these speakers have more midrange presence. Not a good thing in this case. Playing regular music was just fine. Playing well recorded music that also happens to have lots of bass like Nora Jones or Jack Johnson displays how accurate these are. Not much boom. Overall, I like them. If my car were below 100K miles, I would have went for higher end speakers in the front which most likely would have been an improvement over these. Translation; They're an improvement over stock but not the best.
The woofers are cheap in that they have the same foam surround that had deteriorated with the original woofers. Not good. Same as stock. Buying a higher end one should get you a butyl rubber surround which seem to last and last. That being said, if you need something for the front doors these are a viable option but if you're looking for the absolute best speaker for the door, keep looking. I have heard better but I am happy with these in my car.
Here is a link to where I got them from.
