When a compressor goes bad, it often sheds crap into the system, which lodges in the receiver/dryer & in the expansion valve. Then the compressor is pumping against a blockage which isn't good.
Also, whenever the system is opened to the air, the dessicant inside of the receiver/dryer should be replaced, so it doesn't present a risk of coming loose & plugging your expansion valve.
(It's easy for me to talk about spending YOUR money.) But if you don't do those, just be aware of the risk.
