Well, as you know, all engines produce more or less "ping" (pre/post combustion spikes) due to high compression, carbon build up, cheap gasolin, high turbo boost, lean running conditions etc, etc.
An engine that ping really bad can crack pistons as an example.
So if you have some running scenarios where the engine is pinging badly and the knock sensing device inside IDM is doing whatever in can to reduce timing, turbo boost and so forth to bring down the ping, but that the curve matrix of that knock sensor is made for a completly different fuel system and therefore not calibrated to your engine, it might do damage.
We just don't know enough and I'm not willing to take a chance.
Years ago before I found this bulletin, I also thought it was ok to put a black IDM on instead of a red but now I don't want to try.
I tried ones with a red IDM instead of black and that didn't work at all, car ran bad and check engine light came on, that scared me enough to not do it again. Still, other people drive around with a red instead of black without a problem.
Luckily, most of us live in a free world where we can do whatever we want to our cars so it is nothing stopping you from doing it. It might work for a long time.
