Intermediate pipe too short...

Got a new intermediate pipe to replace old one with bad flex section. Got the old one out that the new one is about 1" shorter! I can get it together by pushing the rear muffler forward, but that leaves it with the rubber hangers at an angle, and will leave the system under a fair amount of tension which I worry will be bad for the system, the front flexpipe especially.
the supplier I got the pipe from swears it is the right one, and it even has a GM parts tag on it, so it ought to fit.
So what do I do now? Force it or ???? Those bell ended pipes are great when they fit, but don't allow any margin for adjustment at all.
