At first I thought it was compressor siezure in the heat(wave) of the moment. In which case it would be ok to limp with standard belt as long as a/c compressor clutch was not engaged.
BUT! After discussing the symtoms with 3 experts, I believe the fault may be in the compressor clutch pulley bearing. In which case I need a shorter belt to bypass the compressor for truely safe limping.
Now that everything is cooled, the clutch and compressor both turn freely.
