With jack stands I was not successful in acessing the top bolt from below. Tried all kinds of extensions - even had someone spotting for me above. Unlike a lift, I was only able to use one hand. The kicker was the fact that I had to loosen the battery cable wire chase from above in order to slack up the cable so I could get it over the terminal stud on the starter mother. So I had to do a lot of work from above. Most of my time was spent trying to figure out how this thing was connected - not in the WIS and I suspect '95's on have a different arrangement - maybe cable ties that can be cut. Anyway its done. If I had to do it over again this is how I would do it:
1) Disconnect neg battery cable.
2) Remove intake manifold (see other posts on how this is done or WIS).
3) Put some slack in the engine wiring harness by undoing a couple of connections on driver side, including the one that has solenoid and Alt. field wires, allowing you to move it up and out of the way.
4) Also disconnect rear oxygen sensor connection.
5) Remove rear engine hoist eye (one torx bolt) so the oxygen sensor wire can be moved aside to giving you room to swing a wrench.
6) Unsnap + battery cable holder just below the battery so cable can be moved to rear to give slack.
7) The + battery cable runs into a chase bolted to the rear corner of the engine above the transmission.
8) Disconnect 10mm bolt connecting the chase to the rear of the firewall side engine head.
9) If you move your head towards the rear of the car - about where the fuse box is you should be able to see two 10mm bolts holding the chase to the engine head on the firewall side. Remove the two bolts.
10) Now that the cable is freed up move the chase towards the firewall.
11) You should now be able to see the top retaining torx bolt on the starter.
12) I used my favorite SK flex head bent handle wrench to get at this bolt. The head is small and the handle is long - attributes that you'll need in this case.
13) Once the bolt is loose, you should be able to finish by hand.
14) Now, jack up the car!
15) Undo the solenoid wire 10mm.
16) Undo the + battery cable 13mm.
17) Put some slack in the + battery cable so it will slide over the terminal.
18) Undo bottom starter torx bolt and remove starter. I did this by positioning the terminal end up then down and out.
Installation is reverse of above. I think for most V6 owners taking off the intake manifold is no big deal - you have to do it to get to the plugs, thermostat, etc.
One note, my starter failed because the ground wire going from the solinoid terminal to a lug on the motor totally corroded away. If I wanted to save some money, I would have gotten a marine battery cable that was the same qage. Cut it to length, strip and tin the non lug end then solder it on. I'd finish with marine epoxy shrink wrap so the cable is totally sealed. I put in the rebuilt starter because of the high milage and the fact I don't want to do this again too soon!
Hope this helps other V6's.
