It gets weirder and weirder.
I decided I ought to compare the two cables, since the old one was still good when I removed it, so I pulled the Napa and put it side by side with the old Saab cable. With the manual adjuster all the way in, the Saab casing was about 1" longer but there was about 1-1/2 inches more inner cable extending out on the Napa cable than the Saab cable.
Which means, it should have been looser than all hell. But it's tight, with no freeplay at all where the Saab cable, with less exposed cable, has some freeplay (though not enough which is why I am replacing it). Guess I'll have to try the Saab cable in again, to see if it still fits. Maybe the space between the firewall and the stop on the tran has somehow grown since I removed the Saab cable.
I can't think of any other explanation.
