I had symptoms similar to what you are describing a year ago. I also had a lot of clunking and vibration that became worse with speed. I checked the wheel for play, but it felt fine. Not knowing what else to do, I replaced the inner CV joint on the passenger side. The clunking and vibration were mostly gone at this point, but the noise was worse. It would get better when I would turn the car one direction, and worse with the other. I again checked the wheel bearing. No noticeable play, but when I would turn the hub with the CV joint spline removed it did feel a bit rough. I then replaced the wheel bearing (not as difficult of a job as I thought it would be, in spite of the smug "you know you need a press for that" the kid at the parts counter fed me) and the car was repaired. Once I got the old bearing out it was obviously the problem. I could barely turn it by hand.
This was on an '02 93 with about 140K miles on it.
While I had the passenger side axle out, I decided to check the timing chain tensioner for wear and discovered it was at the limit. I used Ander's method for replacing the chains with the engine in the car. I figured that it would be easier after I had already removed everything to replace the axle. I guess it probably was. However, this job turned out to be quite the adventure. I don't regret doing it, but it took quite a bit longer than I anticipated.
