Hmmm, have you tried adjusting the cable from the firewall side? You'll have to unbolt the fuze box and roll it to the side, and I found removing the drivers side shock tower to firewall brace to be helpful as well. IIRC, pulling the cable back from the firewall will reset the auto adjuster, then gently seating the cable again will allow the adjuster to set the correct tension.
FWIW, I'm not convinced that clutch stiffness is an indicator of clutch wear on these NG900's. I just had the clutch on my '95 SET replaced for the second time and even though the clutch was really stiff and only engaged at the very bottom of the pedal travel, the clutch disk was,in the words of the service manager, 'not worn much'. Go figure. The new clutch (w/ new clutch arm) is really light and smooth though..
