hi jeff - i had the same thing happen to me this past fall. long and short of it is that your main instrument panel is probably dying. there are very few remedies short of replacing it (or having it repaired) but several postings and even some illustrated instructions for getting it in and out. search on this board for info.
as for the replacement unit, you can either get it repaired, but a new one from SAAB ($$$) or take a gamble and find a used one($), which is what i did. after it is replaced you will have to go to the SAAB dealer to have them sync the mileage on the new unit with your car. bear in mind that they will only turn the counter forward, not backwards, so be sure to look for one that has less miles than your car currently has on it. i drove my car to the dealer, let him verify the miles, removed the unit myself while there, installed the newer one, and they sync'd it up for me for about $35.
it is really a gamble with a used unit. mine speedo works fine now, but i am just having touble with my tach this past week. so - you have to decide what you want to do: save now / spend later...spend now / spend later.
good luck,
scott k.
