ACC squeaky fan removal issue

My '02 9-3 has the squeaky ACC sensor fan disease.
So I've been trying to access the fan per the various posts which suggest first removing the ACC unit. I like the "credit card" approach since presumably it won't mar the surfaces etc. Here are instructions for the credit card approach:
"Slip the credit card into the opening between the ACC and center console hole that it is located in. Use the second card the same way and gently pull one or the other card out and it should come out relatively easily. Disconnect the cable and you should be in business." (Credit to Theo back in 2002).
But I must be missing something. I can insert one or two cards, and even jam in a piece of cardboard to create extra friction, but nothing good happens. Pulling on the cards while bending merely serves to remove the cards.
Maybe I'm missing something basic. Is there a magic trick?
Thanks
Kevin S
