Door latch won't engage...

Upon closing the driver side door on my 1999 9-3, a clunking noise occurs when it attempts to engage the gold bracket on the frame. The latch assembly does not "open up" to accept the bracket when the car door is opened which I gather is due to a broken latch assembly. I can reposition the latch with my key to put in in an open position so that it will close but this is not easy. I've resorted to using my passenger door to enter and exit the car.
I have searched on this bb and found a DIY fix for this problem however there is no reference to part numbers to replace the latch. All I find are comments that the DIY is difficult as it's a tight working space for big hands. There is also mention that the fix is expensive if you take the problem to a mechanic or dealer, however no mention of how expensive. Has anyone taken this problem to a mechanic and had any success? If yes, how expensive was the fix? I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to pull my door apart only to find myself unable to fix it. Also, if I were to try to fix it myself, I want to be sure I'm getting the right parts.
Thanks, JT
