I went through a warranty fight with Bosch, concerning a dishwasher.
Bosch flatly refused to pay for the repairs, so I sued them for $1,500.
I won the full value of the dishwasher, since Bosch didn't bother to show up in court.
Took me another three months to collect on the judgement, but I finally received my money. Their corporate lawyers didn't scare me.
Back on topic: I honestly don't believe you need receipts in order to win a sludge claim. If it did get to the point of a lawsuit, I believe that a court would take into consideration the right of the consumer to do their own maintainence... or that the current owner might not be able to contact the previous owner to obtain records.
The sludge issue is a well-documented problem that has affected plenty of Saab owners, and I believe a court would take that into consideration.
In any case, considering the price of a new engine, I would take it to court if Saab denied the claim.
