it was a long time ago and I no longer have the car; but from memory it was a little reed type switch somewhere inside the convertible stowage area - possibly next to the hinge on the plastic "lid" that opens when in the first stage of opening - the switch was either broken or the contacter was out of adjustment - the dealer told me that these micro-switches activate when the moving part such as the stowage lid, reaches fully open, this sends a signal to the hood control electronics so that it will activate the next stage of the sequence - if the switch doesn't close properly and make the signal the hood will stop and you get "soft top error" on the SID. It's not a switch in the cabin that you operate.
This was the only soft top problem that I had with that car, I'd recommend taking it to a saab mechanic - I think it's a common problem but you need experience to make all the adjustments to the soft top mechanism.
