97 900s manual, intermediate driveshaft question

Just got through stage one of the cable->hydraulic clutch conversion, removal of the transmission (using Dmitri Platonoff's EXCELLENT picture guide).
The intermediate shaft is now free on the transmission side and it seems to have quite a bit of slop in it. I can wiggle it up and down 1/4" travel on the transmission end. I can't tell if the bearing is moving in the housing or the bearing itself is just worn.
A couple of questions.
1) Is that really excessive movement?
2) Where does one get a replacement (other that the dealer)? I've checked a couple of my usual online outlets without success...
