Removing the tensioner for inspection is not difficult. If memory serves me correctly, nothing else has to be removed. As long as there is still room for expansion in the tensioner you are probably OK. It is when the chain gets slack because the tensioner is already at its limits and can't pull the chain tight anymore that you get into trouble.
I think the balance shaft gear problem was limited to earlier years. I believe Anders has made this point in the past and when I took mine apart the gears were in perfect shape and I reused them. I think I made an error in my earlier post, the idler gear that I couldn't remove was on the balance shaft chain not the timing chain.
The serpentine belt tensioner setup was basically the same on both my '94 and my '02. I usually use a 1/2" drive extension bar to pull it slack.
