So I replaced the ignition switch in my 1998 900S.
The old one turned out to be fine. The little bolts that hold it became undone. One was completely out -- I found it on the floor under the gearshift housing. The second was hanging by a thread. I am glad I got to replace it -- it could have detached at any moment. Would be pretty inconvenient and probably expensive. I installed the new switch anyway.
The whole repair took a couple of hours and was not that difficult. You just have to be slow and very deliberate. Lots of plastic parts and easy to break stuff if you are not careful. I imagine this repair would have been far more difficult in cold weather due to hardened plastics.
You must disconnect the shift linkage if you have manual transmission. It sounds scarier than it is. I followed procedure laid out in Haynes manual -- it was very easy. After the shift rod is freed from the gearbox, you can slide the whole gearshift housing out enough to put it on its side and gain good access to the ignition switch. Reverse lock-out was fairly easy to figure out, too.
The hardest part by far for me was to reattach the center console. Specifically those two plastic clips at the top are not very easy to either remove, or install. It took the most time because I dropped one and had to pull back the carpet to get to it. I hate those things!
After all said and done, most of my symptoms are gone. Lights turn off, key works smoothly again and I can remove it. However, the car still stalls once in a while :-( So it is back to the drawing board for me.
I noticed that the engine will stall only when it is still cold after at least several hours off. For example, when I leave work it will not stall on hot days. On cool days it will stall. So it seems to be temperature related. Any ideas?
