When we found out we were having twins (we already had one) my wife, who swore up and down she would never drive a minivan, not happily, changed her tune, (although disk 5 in the CD player is Marlyn Manson... the other 5 are much more kid friendly).
I'd hate to be a wet blanket, but especially with 3 kids, when looking at a family car you have to decide how much you value safety and convience to image.
Our Odessey is surprisingly quick and nimble for its size... plus being able to remotely open the side doors (and roll down all the windows) is awesome. We have all three kids across the 2nd row in Britax Marathons, (good to 65 lbs). When the twins go forward facing, we'll probably have to replace the center Marathon with a Regent so we can get some overlapping of the seats. As big as the rear hatch is on the 9-3, I could fit my 9-3 in the back of my wife's minivan. Also, the Mazda 5 really isn't an option... there is almost no storage behind the third row.
That said, we did have all three across the back of our 1999 9-3 for a few months while saving up for the minivan, (twins ain't cheap). The key is safe seats and overlapping. Since all three of your are old enought to be forward facing, look at Britax Marathons (Boulevards or Decathlons) on the out board and a Regent (good up to 85lbs) in the center.... but you'll want to go measure them together first.
I'll stop now before I go off on my tirade on people who spend 40K on a new SUV but balk at spending more than $40 on a car seat and play DVDs even on short trips to store so they don't have to speak to their kids.
