Buffing out very light scratches in windshield

I have a few long scratches on the windshield of my 900SET after using my wipers in a storm the other week. I did not realize the blade was bad on one of them and the plastic from the wiper left a a few long surface scratches. I've looked into buffing these out and it looks like this is very possible to do, I was just concerned about buffing compounds interacting with any coatings that may be on the windshield. I notice in rain water beads up like there is coating on the outside of the glass. Has anyone here ever buffed out their windshield with success? Any tips?
Thanks!
