If you boil your brake fluid, that will decrease braking ability (often permanently, at least until you re-bleed the brakes). Fade, on the other hand, is when a pad becomes hot enough that the organic binding agents begin to vaporise. This creates a layer of gas between the pad and the disc, and if severe enough will completely remove your ability to slow down (I encountered this very situation once - it's rather alarming to be heading towards a tight downhill corner on a hillside and know that you have to _release_ the brakes to clear the gas a bit before you can continue braking). Slotted or drilled rotors help with this by providing a channel for the gas to leave whilst still allowing pad-to-rotor contact.
Disclaimer: I have always understood pad fade as I've explained it, but I cannot claim to have verified this explanation through reading of the original research.
