I too got a Sirius receiver as a present, but from my two closest friends from grad school on one of those birthdays that end in 0. I used the built-in FM modulator to connect to the car stereo ('99 9-3 base), which worked fine (acceptable sound quality) where I normally drive but was a PITA in other locations (e.g., 100 miles away) where the weak band in my home neighborhood was occupied, or adjacent to, a strong signal.
I ran the antenna from the roof above the hatch down to the interior of the hatch well, then to the driver side of the hatch and below the carpet all the way to the driver's footwell, then below the steering wheel to the center stack. It was a clean install but I rushed and broke a couple clips that hold the door sill covers down - not something you would notice unless you were anal about your car (don't ask how I know).
I had the local TAP plastics fabricate a plastic plate that fit over the opening of the small storage cubby next to the 12V power outlet, connected the mounting spur for the Sirius receiver to the plate, then used some 3" bolts from the local hardware store to connect the plate to the cubby. Very clean mount, but pretty low to see the display to know who's playing.
My son's driving that 9-3 now and I have a new 2.0T SC, but I miss satellite radio. Have to figure out a way to hook that up in the new car.
